Maya Tanaka is a Japanese and Lebanese American filmmaker based in Brooklyn. Her work questions historical narratives around cultural legacy, queerness, gender, and sexuality through writing and film.

Maya was the 2021 recipient of the Tribeca Studios x Chanel Through Her Lens Female Filmmaking grant for her short film, Honolulu. Her previous film, The Price of Cheap Rent, co-directed and written by Amina Sutton, premiered at TIFF 2020 and won the NYWIFT Female Director award at TIDE Film Festival. It was distributed as part of The New Yorker’s The Screening Room series. 

Maya’s work has screened at Urbanworld Film Festival, New Orleans Film Festival, Atlanta International Film Festival, Cleveland International Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, Cucalorous, Aspen Shortsfest, Hollyshorts, BlackStar, Palm Springs ShortFest, TIDE, and more. She is a 2022 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow in Playwriting/Screenwriting.
